Course

Course Requirement

SNU requires all students to complete a specific number of credits for different types of courses including general education courses and major courses as well as specific courses. The requirements vary by department, but students must satisfy their department requirements for graduation. Below is the common requirement for all departments. However, some departments may have different requirements than shown here, so make sure to check your department requirements.

General education courses:36 credits or more (based on the lowest requirement)
Major courses:60 credits or more OR 39 credits or more if studying double major/minor (based on the lowest requirement)
130 credits or more for graduation (based on the lowest requirement)
Tips for each course type
  • Mandatory major : Courses offered by the department that are mandatory.
  • Elective major : Courses offered by the department that are optional.
  • General education : Courses that can be taken freely. Some general education courses of specific fields may be required.
  • Teacher training : Educational theory and hands-on courses for teaching certification.
  • General elective : Course classification when taking a major course offered by a department to which the student is not affiliated. Credits will not be counted towards the major or general education requirements.
  • Although the classification of a course can be changed through the corresponding department office, such a change is only possible when the request is approved.

Course Registration

All students are to use the course registration website to register for the next semester courses before the semester begins. Course registration can be done anywhere with Internet access, but make sure to be quick since the maximum number of students for each course can fill up very fast as soon as the registration begins. Courses with times that overlap cannot be registered and generally a maximum of 18 credits can be registered. However, courses like the freshmen seminar can be registered regardless of such  restrictions. Students with a GPA of 3.3 or higher for the previous 2 semesters can register up to 21 credits. But since this condition is to assess whether the student was academically diligent for the past 2 semesters, if there were repeated courses in the past 2 semesters, both the original and repeated grades are included in the calculation.

Before the course registration begins, there is preliminary course registration period. When the course registration is done during this period, registration button can be clicked on faster. Also, you can see how many have registered for a course during this period. This information can be important in coming up with a strategy on the order of courses to click the registration button. If you were unable to register for a course of your choice, please try 'Quota exceeding course registration request'. There are 3 steps for this request; request-approval-confirm registration. Visit the SNU CRS (Course Registration System) and you can find it under the 'Course Registration' menu. After your request is submitted, an instructor or the department office will approve or reject you request. Once you requests is approved, you should confirm the course registration in 'Quota exceeding course registration' menu within the designated period. Please make sure there is no overlapping courses and you have available credits for registration before request. 

All freshmen register courses during the same period. Course registration method is combination of adding courses to the course cart and first-come-first-served registration. On day 1-2 of course registration, you can shop and add courses to your course cart. On day 3, the Office of Academic Affairs confirms course cart requests into course registration, as long as the requests are not more than the course quota. If cart requests exceed the quota, the course will become "Pending course" and no one will be registered. On day 4 (first-come-first-served course registration day 1), course registration of pending courses are restricted to students who had added the course to their carts. On day 5-6 (first-come-first-served course registration day 2-3), all students can register pending courses for the remaining quota. Meanwhile, for courses which have not reached their quota, all students can freely register for the entire 3 days of first-come-first-served period. If there are vacancies for courses which had reached its quota, "available quota after cancellation" mark will appear. During the first-come-first-served registration period and course change period, available quota after cancellation can be registered only 3 times a day. You can find out its detailed time by pressing the mark. 

Be aware that some courses from certain departments or colleges may restrict registration. Also, do read the course details since some are taught only in English while some may be held in a different campus. Note that the year number displayed in the course information is only the recommended year, and does not limit students of other years from registering. Make sure to check the course syllabus as well as whether the course can be registered through the pop-up window when clicking the course title or the remarks column in the course search of the registration website.

After 10 minutes of inactivity, you will be automatically signed out of the website and any abnormal course registration attempts will result in a block out for 30 minutes. Since 2012, additional security measures were added to prevent the use of illegal programs. Now you must input the security text shown before clicking the course registration button, and 5 failed attempts will sign you out automatically.

Academic Disenrollment (Probation)

Students with grades below a certain level may be disenrolled (removal of the student name from the register). Students with GPAs lower than 1.7, or F grades for more than 3 courses or 6 credits are placed under academic probation. Undergraduate students who are placed under the academic probation 4 times are subject to disenrollment. To prevent this, the university identifies students placed under the academic probation 2~3 times and their departments will be notified.

Semester Classification

SNU’s academic calendar consists of 1st semester (Spring) and 2nd semester (Fall). Each semester comprises a regular semester (16 weeks) and an extra session (5 weeks), followed by summer/winter vacation.

Summer and Winter Sessions
Summer and winter sessions are distinguished from regular semesters in that they are offered to students as a chance to acquire credits during vacations and are open to those who wish to take classes during these sessions.

  • Course Registration Periods: Summer - mid May / Winter - mid November
  • Credit Limits: Students are allowed to take maximum 9 credits in summer and 6 credits in winter semester.

Course Change/Override

During the course change/override period, the course registration website will be open again to all students and you will be able to register for the courses that have remaining seats.

Note: For course registration, students must login with their student number (e.g. 2021-8****) and password. The system is open from 9 am to 6 pm.

If the course you wish to add is already full or restricted online, you may get an additional seat upon the instructor's confirmation. This manual course registration is called "Course Override". To file a course override form, you must e-mail the instructor to inquire on the course override availability. Please note that not every instructor will be able to accommodate your request. In this case, you must find another course.

How to?

Check your current list of registered courses through mySNU or course registration website.

  • mySNU > Academic Affairs > Class/Grade > Class > My Courses or My Timetable
  • Course registration website > Course Registration (green menu) > Details of Course Registration; if you wish to drop a course, you can delete it from this menu.
STEP02
If you wish to add more courses, register for the course through Course Search in the same way you did for the previous online course registration. The newly added course will appear on your eTL on the next day.
STEP03
What if the course you wished to take is full already? Or, what if the course is restricted and you cannot access it? For the courses with full quota, please check the course registration website as frequently as possible to find an available seat, as there usually are lots of changes made in registration status during the course change period. If you cannot access the course due to the restriction, you may ask the instructor to allow you to take the course.  This process of acquiring a permission for additional registration is called as course override and “CHO-AN-JI (초안지) ” in SNU’s notion.

Since the course override procedure may vary by department, please check the website of the department office that offers the course. The college and department information for each course can be found in the following way:

Fill out the override form. You can find the required information from the course registration website; see Ac(ademic). Y(ea)r., Course No., Lec(ture). No., Course Title and the first number of Cred(it).-Lec(ture hour per week).-Lab (hour per week).

Contact the instructor to ask for a permission. You can find the instructor’s contact information when you click on the course title. In the e-mail, introduce yourself and state why you need this course, along with the completed override form.

In case your request is approved, the instructor will inform you of the next step (how to submit the form to the department office). When you complete the form submission procedure, the course will be added on your mySNU and eTL the next day. In many cases, the instructor will ask you to send the override form and the instructors’ approval e-mail to the department office that offers the course. For example, if the course is offered by Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, you must submit the form to the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering departmental office, even though you are affiliated with a different department.

If the course to be overridden clashes with any existing course in your timetable, you must delete the existing one on the course registration system to empty the slot for the newly added course, by the last day of the course change period. Also, the total number of courses must be 18 credits or less, so you must ensure the total of the final number of credits do not exceed 18 credits.

Virtual Class Operations

While the types and platforms of virtual class operation may vary by class and instructor, these are the main operations at SNU.

Course Drop (Withdrawal)

Spring/Fall Semester: After the course registration change period ~ 1/2 of class days
Summer/Winter Session: 1 week before the first day of class ~ 1/2 of class days

How to?

Write course drop reason in a course > Save > Submit
STEP03

After submission: Wait for the instructor's approval. Once the application is approved, the course won’t be shown on your course timetable. In case the drop is not approved, the instructor will leave you a note why it is not allowed, in which case you may re-apply for course drop.

Notes:
   - Course drop is completed after instructor's approval within withdrawal period.
   - Course drop cannot be reversed after instructor's approval.
   - If instructor rejects course drop request, reason will be written in 'Note'. 

Course Evaluation

After finishing final exams, you will be asked to do course evaluation for each class through mySNU. It is not mandatory, but if you complete the course evaluation, you can check its grade immediately when the instructor publish it. Unless you do course evaluation, you cannot see the grade until a later date.
