SNU AT A GLANCE

Seoul National University has achieved a great deal in its 70-year history. As an indisputable leader of higher education in Korea, our university is known for the caliber of the students and the prestigious alumni network. The University has earned this distinction by maintaining the uppermost standards for education and research.

The founding of SNU in 1946 marked the opening of the first national university in modern Korean history. Originally, the university was composed of one graduate school and nine colleges, with 491 faculty members and 4,500 students. Today, the university is comprised of 16 colleges, 3 specialized graduate schools, 1 graduate school, and 135 research institutes and other supporting facilities with 5,361 faculty members and 28,011 students.
SNU has been ranked 35 in 2013 QS World University Rankings, 5th in producing CEOs in 500 leading enterprises conducted by the Ecole des Mines de Paris - MINES ParisTech, and is now working towards becoming one of the top ten universities in the world by 2025.

currently has an exchange agreement MOU with 56 countries and 273 institutions. Even with one of the most comprehensive networks in Republic of Korea, SNU strives to form collaborative ties with more top-ranked universities in order to expand the opportunities for students for global education. Among all colleges and graduate divisions at SNU, two most representative schools for global education are the Graduate School of International Studies and the SNU Business School. These two schools pride in having an active presence of international scholars and students from all over the world. For instance, the Global MBA Program is taught by professors from top ten world-class business schools, including Wharton, London Business School, Yale, NYU, Duke, among others. In addition, there are non-degree international programs for visiting & exchange students available for 47 countries and 199 universities. The International Summer Institute, our popular summer program, has students from all over the world and faculty from top-tier universities such as Oxford University, Cambridge University, University of Pennsylvania; it also boasts of a high quality Korean Language class offered by the Language Education Institute at SNU.


In the spring semester of 2015, SNU provided about 15% of classes that are conducted in English for undergraduates and graduates. Aside from scholarships guaranteed for qualified undergraduate students, SNU also provides scholarships for the students from developing countries that are listed in the DAC List of ODA Recipients.

In 2007 SNU established SISA (SNU International Students Association), SISA hosts several activities including International Students Sports Festival, Korean Culture Trip, Ambassadors Meeting, International Food Festival, and other SISA social events. In addition, the international alumni networks for many countries in Europe, the U.S., and Asia are expanding every year.

The locations of the SNU campuses offer distinct benefits for the students, whether it is the Gwanak Campus or the Yonggeon Campus. At Gwanak, the students enjoy having the beautiful Gwanak Mountain near the campus, with breathtaking sceneries every season. Yonggeon Campus, right at the center of the city of Seoul, students can enjoy all the social and cultural events that a major metropolitan city like Seoul has to offer.
